If the image is significantly bigger than the recommended size, and the server is slow, then yes that could potentially lead to slow loading of the image.

I noticed that the images in the homepage slider also loads a bit slowly, even though the file size is less than 100kb. This does suggest that the server has slow connection speed.

The layout issue is likely due to the significant changes between the latest version of Graphene, and version 1.9.4.2. The changes are more than cosmetic and goes down to the structural level, in order to support modern web features and compatibility with many different device form factors.

I would suggest to make a copy of the site, and perform the update on that copy. Any layout issues can then be addressed and fixed on the site’s copy, without affecting the live website. When everything is ready, you can then transfer the copy back into the live website.

Try going to Customizer > Graphene: Display > WP Editor, and tick the option “Disable custom editor styles”. Let me know if that fixes the issue.

There is currently a bug in featured image handling on homepage. This will be fixed in the next theme update coming soon.
