The child theme folder name is gmneo-custom. This is mentioned in the theme’s readme.txt file. Have a read through that file as it also contains information regarding the shortcodes that come with the theme.

It is still needed. The helper plugin is used for the following purposes:

1. Make installation as easy as possible – the helper plugin loads the necessary files that will guide you through automatic install of the switcher plugin

2. Able to use GM Neo with any other themes without having to modify the theme’s codes (unlike Graphene Mobile)

3. Automatically configure the Mobile Smart plugin to use settings that are optimal for use with GM Neo

We did consider integrating the mobile switcher plugin with the helper plugin, but decided not to so that users can use other mobile switcher plugins if they want to.

Download the Graphene theme files that you have modified previously. Then, use WinMerge to find the difference between the modified files and the fresh copy of the theme.

It’s best to get the fresh copy that is the same version as the theme’s version you’re currently using. You can download any version of the theme using the link in this format:

http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/download/graphene.<version>.zip?nostats=1

Replace <version> with the version you want to download, e.g. 1.8.1.

After that, migrate all the difference / changes that you did to the theme’s files into the child theme you’ve created.

The post excerpt thumbnail will be the featured image set for that post. If you set the featured image so that it will be displayed as the header image when that post is displayed, that featured image will also be the thumbnail for that post’s excerpt.

Right now there’s no option to use the featured image for the header and another image for the post thumbnail, so you’ll have to either resort to a separate plugin for the thumbnail excerpt, or manually set the header image for those posts via a child theme and leave the featured image for the post excerpt thumbnail.

If you create a new FTP user like this, you’ll also have to assign the root folder of your website to this new FTP user. Otherwise, like you said you’ll just see an empty folder.

You don’t actually have to create a new FTP user, as usually you can just use the same username and password that you use to login to your server’s control panel.

The reason why we ask to switch to default theme is to rule out / rule in theme issue. If the issue persists over different themes, then it is likely not a theme issue but a plugin one. Conversely, if the issue is resolved by switching themes, then it is likely a theme issue and we’ll work with you to try and resolve it.

We’re not pointing fingers and disowning responsibility, but merely trying to ascertain where the issue lies and how best to find a solution.
