When not perched on my workspace, I tremendously enjoy hiking in the bushes and climbing mountains. They serve as much-needed refuges from the pretense of cities.

Yeah you can put that in. When you do, go to Appearance > Themes and see the version number and let me know.

Insert into the Custom CSS option:
.header_desc {
display: none;

Hurm..what was the last version you used, 1.3.1?

Can you take a look at the error log again, and copy the last 100 lines from it?
Admin
Yes, try the new version again.

OK, try activating some other theme, like the TwentyTen theme and see if the error goes away.

Something to try: go to WP Admin > Settings > Permalinks and resave your permalink settings.

Do you have FTP access to the server? Try deleting the theme’s folder and then manually uploading the new version.
If you have access to the error log, that would be helpful too. It’s difficult to troubleshoot when the only error message you have is “500 Internal Server Error”.

When you see the message “Images of exactly 1050 × 198 pixels will be used as-is.” in the WP Admin > Appearance > Header, that’s a good sign you got it right 🙂

There’s always a chance a website can be hacked, even the most secure one.
Unfortunately, it’s close to impossible to tell what vulnerabilities the hacker exploited to gain access to your site. It could be the server’s configuration, it could be WordPress, it could the plugins you’re using, it could be the theme, it could be any number of sources.
The best course of action now is to restore your child theme’s index page, and then change all passwords on your site, including WP Admin password, FTP password, server control panel password, etc.
