Options 1 and 2 are not viable, since I do not possess the necessary technical skills to pull this off.
I have no interest in paying someone to provide a solution. I will simply go into the “Posts” section of my dashboard and mark the older posts as “Non-sticky,” so that they are no longer on the front page. This is more work for me, but if there are not other options, this is the route that I will take.
If you will refer to my initial responses to both you and Syahir, you will see that I did, in fact, indicate that I did not want to use the Archives pages.
I have copied them, below.
‘Yes, but I don’t want the site visitor to have to go to the archives page for each category. I want the post to go to the “Art” page, for example, not the “Archive Page: Art” page.’
‘As I indicated previously, I don’t want my visitors to have to go an “archive” page. I want them to go to one of the pages in my header menu and be able to view a page containing excerpts of all of the articles on that page, with the ability to click on “Read more” to see the full article.”
Setting up a child theme and fooling around with the custom functions .php files is the same as altering the code, in my mind. All of this is beyond the limits of my technical expertise. I need a current-version compatible plug-in or some other non-tech reliant solution or I will just use some type of work-around, like copying and pasting the article into a regular page, and using the “read more” function in the editor to create an excerpt. This would definitely be more work, but would involve less risk, in that I would not be fooling around with something that is outside my capabilities.
You are absolutely right: everything has risks. However, I figure that when a notice is inserted on the plug-in’s Description page which reads “Warning: This plugin has not been tested with your current version of WordPress,” and the FYI indicates that the plug-in has not been updated in 739 days and is multiple versions of WordPress behind, in terms of testing, I am not inclined to risk the functionality of my website on this.
I will just continue to search for a plug-in that is kept up-to-date and, thus, minimizes my risk down to a level that I find acceptable.
I understand that this support forum is a free service, and I honestly and sincerely appreciate being able to take advantage of it. I want to make it clear that I was calm the first two or three times that I made the request. However, after receiving basically the same reply over and over, I became frustrated, as anyone would.
Here’s my objection to using the archives and just linking the appropriate menu buttons to them: the fact that the wording “Category Archive: ____________” appears at the top of the page. I feel like the wording “Category Archive:” cheapens my site and makes it look bad. If there is a way – short of having to edit the code, which I don;t want to do – to remove the wording “Category Archive:” at the top of page, and just have the name of the category appear there, I could live with that.
Thank you for your assistance.
You know, I appreciate your trying to help me. It is just frustrating when you don’t read my messages thoroughly.
First of all, the FYI section of the plug-in’s Description page says that it is not compatible with the current version. Look at this text, which I copied directly from the Description page: Compatible up to: 3.1.4. The current version of WordPress is 3.5.2.
Further evidence that you simply don;t understand what I am trying to do is that you KEEP TRYING TO SUGGEST THAT I USE OR CREATE AN ARCHIVES PAGE. I DO ********************NOT*********************WANT TO USE AN ARcHIVES PAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT MY VISITORS TO BE ABLE TO GO TO ONE OF THE PAGES LISTED IN THE MENU AT THE TOP OF MY SITE, AND GO TO A ***REGULAR*** – NOT AN ARCHIVES PAGES – WHERE THEY CAN FIND THE SAME EXCERPT.
WHAT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THIS REQUEST???!!!
WHAT DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND? I DO NOT WANT TO DIRECT MY VISITORS TO ARCHIVE PAGES!!! I WANT THEM TO BE ABLE TO CLICK ON THE VARIOUS MENU BUTTONS AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE AND THEN BE ABLE SEE EXCERPTS OF THE ARTICLES THAT WERE ALSO POSTED TO THE FRONT PAGE.
CAN YOU PROVIDE ME WITH AN OPTION THAT DOES NOT INVOLVE SENDING THEM TO ARCHIVE PAGES?
I am NOT going to use a plug-in that has not been tested and deemed compatible with the current version of WordPress, especially one that has not been updated in OVER TWO YEARS!
Can you recommend something that is compatible with the current version of WordPress?
As I indicated previously, I don’t want my visitors to have to go an “archive” page. I want them to go to one of the pages in my header menu and be able to view a page containing excerpts of all of the articles on that page, with the ability to click on “Read more” to see the full article.
Can anyone tell me how to make that happen?
