Oh joy! I seem to have a working website, with posts showing up where I want them to – thanks to Prasana, K J Odle and cleevewebby. I really am grateful to everyone (including the site’s author): I shall be telling my family, friends and contacts where to look for Tangles and her associates later today. Thanks again! (And I shall by changing the topic’s status to Resolved.)

    Best wishes

I have, as discussed in recent posts, got a floating column containing a Search box, widgets for Recent Comments et al. I will try adding a widget for recent posts, if I can find one.

In my Dashboard, if I choose Settings, then Reading, I see a radio button against A static page (select below) I select About us. Immediately below that it says (no radio button) Posts Page, with a choice window alongside, from which I choose Tangles: the Blog (which is the name of the tab as per my custom menu). I save and when the beach ring stops turning I return to the site. Tangles the Blog has no text, and on the left hand side it has a Search Box and the widget generated recent posts etc.

Now, if I put the first four words of the the text I typed to see if I could get the same effect as you, in the Search Box, a blue bar with Tangles the Blog in it appears, and below that the text I typed, and the search box etc has floated magically to the right. I choose edit page, and there was the text, I saved it, went back to view the site, and there is nothing on the Tangles the Blog page, and the search box etc has floated magically back to the left.

I shan’t bother with Homepage Panes!

Yes, I did add a posts page – and chose Tangles: the blog. What do you mean when you say, posts don’t appear on a page, they appear on their own? Where do they appear? I really am puzzled – I assumed all posts when published neatly placed themselves on the Posts page.

And what are homepage panes? (Yes, About us is intended and chosen to be a static front page.)

I think on the whole I will go with one page for three ‘people’ to post on – since I’m the administrator and comments moderator, it really doesn’t make much difference, it’s just that my three alter egos/ pseudonyms write very different books, articles (and eventually posts). But I do need to know where the posts will appear and what I have to do to influence their destination.

Thank you for being so helpful and patient!

Later – I’ve just read your blog and hope I don’t rate one of your scolds! If I sound angry, it’s because I am, but with me. And also frustrated when I follow instructions and still don’t get the result I wanted … I’m also feeling pleased with myself: I have just ventured into the site’s config page and added some html.

Thank you, but I’ve decided I simply can’t face CSS (can I suggest that the Graphene theme needs a step by step guide for the assistance of those, like me, who start from No Knowledge At All.

PLUS it needs a glossary which goes into the greatest detail possible about words which geeks use without thinking but non-geeks do not understand – with, preferably, real website examples (screenshots?).

And this guide and glossary would need updating every time a change is made, even the most minor …

And having got that off my chest – I’ve been struggling with this website for 7 weeks – I need yet more help (I’ve been grateful for the help I’ve had already, but I keep finding things I don’t know how to do.

Like – I’ve given up on having three pages set up to take posts and comments, and settled for one page [Tangles: the Blog] on which all posts and comments will go. BUT, in spite of following the instruction about Quick Edit and choosing the page template (two columns, one for the text, and the sidebar on the right) several times, the page Tangles: the Blog persists in coming up with the sidebar on the left.

And, a most important point, when I add a new Post – where do I tell the software on which page I want the Post to appear??? I’ve lost Tangles’ first post altogether, and keep losing whatever I try to replace it with …

Sorry for time getting back to you, haven’t been at the computer with spare time to cope with the website. I was able to follow your instructions re the meta widget.

You went on to query the width settings (920) because ‘that sidebar is appearing under the page content, rather than next to it’. It’s ok on my 22″ screen – or was when I last looked. Is this one of the occasions I’ve been warned about where the theme displays differently on different machines?

And finally – I’m afraid you forgot my handicap (elderly ellen) – you didn’t say where I had to enter the ?HTML you gave me to alter the size of the widget headers??

Sorry to be a nuisance – I am getting there!

Easy when you know how! Thank you very much indeed – beautifully clear, and completely successful – and I’ve learned now a bit more about where and how to look for tweakings.

    Best wishes.
