"Fixing" Changes in Graphene 2.0

    The release of Graphene 2.0 definitely changed the look and feel of my sites, and, in many cases, not for the better. I’m trying to get things back to the way they used to look, so I’ll start this topic to determine how to “fix” things back to the way they used to be, which may also help some others who experienced the same. Keep in mind, I have two different WordPress installations that use this theme, and, in some cases, each are displaying slightly different behaviors. Prior to the upgrade to 2.0, I had made some customizations to the theme using the theme settings, but I had not created a child theme (at least not on purpose).

    Here goes!

    1) It seems that on all pages that are not the home page, the Site Title is now a link back to the homepage. That might be ok, but, on one site, that overrides the font color I have had to set using custom CSS for the Site Title (black). Interestingly, on the second site, the font for the Site Title and and Site description appear to be black by default (no custom CSS required) and don’t change from page to page. How do I either a) make the Site Title not a link on those pages that are not the home page or b) change that link (and just that link) so that it is the same color on all pages?

    2) The new default font for the entire site seems to be something new called “Lato” (and now defaults to 12pt). If I would like to change that default font for the entire site, how would I do that? This doesn’t appear to be an option in the multitude of menus when I try to customize the theme. Also, interestingly, this font appears on all pages on one site, but on the second site, all pages seemed to have maintained the Arial font that it had before this theme upgrade.

    3) Some elements on one of the sites now seem to be slightly off, e.g. the black bars on the top and bottom of the header graphic are now slightly wider than the graphic itself, the header bars for widgets are all now slightly shorter than the widgets themselves, etc. I’m unsure how to track this problem down since there don’t appear to be any theme options that effect any change in this appearance. Thoughts?

    That should be sufficient to start for now. Thanks for any help!

    Please provide the links to both sites so that we can take a look.

    Thanks Syahir.

    The first site is public and can be viewed here: http://www.odsua.com.

    The second site, unfortunately, is for members only and can only be viewed when logged in as a registered member. I’ll have to rely on what I learn from troubleshooting the first site to fix the second site if you have to view the site in order to describe what settings need to be changed in Graphene.

    The good news is that the majority of the problems with the second site seemed to have been fixed after the third time restarting my browser and clearing its cache. It seems that my browser was loading cached parts of the old theme along with parts of the upgraded theme. That has resolved #3 from the original post and now made problems #1 and #2 appear the same on both sites.

    I hope this helps!

    Apologies if this is a double post as I tried to submit a post to the forum yesterday/Saturday but looks like the forum has now changed too?

    I am also having significant changes to my website since the change to 2.0.

    I have no customised scripting to the original theme just adapted the display using settings in WP.

    I think I have managed to work around or adapt to most of the changes but some that I might need some assistance:

    1) Widget headings are now back to the default blue gradient with rounded edges but now do not align to the column widths. And I can not change the background colour back to black which I had before.

    2) The social media buttons previously appearing at the top of the page are now shrunk and distorted and appearing vertically rather than horizontally. I’ve had to disable that top bar which also held the search bar.

    3) I used to have blog posts set to 420 px width but now I can’t set the display according to pixels but only in terms of columns? I think I may have worked around that.

    4) I have set the container width to 960 (which I believe I had in the previous version) but it doesn’t seem to be affecting the blog layout which seems to default to greater than that.

    I suspect I may have to remove and reset the post IDs for the slider because the scroll bar at the bottom of the slider now goes off the right side of the slider.

    Any assistance you may be able to provide I would be most grateful.

    @strider4336,

    1) It seems that on all pages that are not the home page, the Site Title is now a link back to the homepage … b) change that link (and just that link) so that it is the same color on all pages?

    Add this code to Additional CSS:

    .header_title, .header_title a, .header_title a:visited, .header_title a:hover, .header_desc {
       color: #000;
    }

    2) The new default font for the entire site seems to be something new called β€œLato” (and now defaults to 12pt). If I would like to change that default font for the entire site, how would I do that?

    Add this code to Additional CSS (and amend the font name and size as necessary):

    body {
       font-family: "Arial";
       font-size: 16px;
    }

    It seems that my browser was loading cached parts of the old theme along with parts of the upgraded theme.

    This seems to be a common cause resulting in many people panicking over the changes as their site falsely appears “broken”. I’ll try to see if it is possible to automatically instruct browsers to clear cache immediately after the update.

    @televisionau,

    Apologies if this is a double post as I tried to submit a post to the forum yesterday/Saturday but looks like the forum has now changed too?

    The old forum had been using legacy bbPress version for a long time. It was notoriously difficult to maintain and make secure. During the last few months some users have also been having difficulties creating new topics and posting replies, as you have experienced.

    With Graphene 2.0 release, we’ve migrated the forum to the latest version of bbPress, WordPress, and Graphene. It’s currently serving as our testbed for perfecting bbPress integration with Graphene.

    As for your website, it looks like it’s using a mixture of old and new Graphene stylesheets. Couple of things to try:

    • Try deleting the theme, and installing it again.
    • If you are using any caching plugin, like W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache, make sure to clear its cache.

    Thanks for the quick response.
    I am not aware of using any caching plugins, but I will try to re-install the theme and see how it goes. Thanks again.

    I tried deleting and re-installing the theme but same has happened I’m afraid.

    I’m not knowledgeable enough to know about caching but I’m guessing this is something that might clear/update over the next day or so? I can ask my web host about that if that is more their domain.

    But I don’t use any plugins for caching.

    If there is anything else you might be able to advise I would appreciate it but otherwise I will see if it fixes itself over the next day or so.

    @televisionau, I see what’s happening. Looks like you’re using Cloudflare which are caching the stylesheets.

    We’ll be releasing an update for the theme shortly which should indicate to browsers to fetch a new copy of the stylesheets instead of using cache. In the mean time, you can also resolve the issue by clearing your site’s Cloudflare cache.

    @ms-jaguar, that looks like a cache issue. The latest update (version 2.0.2) should fix that.

    @Sayir Hakim, thanks very much for the replies. Your code suggestions worked in both cases, i.e. keeping the Site Title the same color on all pages and changing the font to Arial across the entire site, at least for the body elements. You might consider adding these options to the Customization menus as I would consider them major customization elements rather than minor tweaks.

    A few more questions:

    1. The body element seemed to work for the majority of the site, but the site menu still seems to be in the Lato font, 12 pt/16px. Using the element inspector in Firefox, the overriding element style for the menu elements is “.navbar .nav > li > a”. How should I target that element, or is there a higher level element (like body) that should override that style?
    2. I had some CSS code in the Additional CSS on the public site that allowed me to right justify the last menu item, the desired look when the screen is wide enough:
      #header-menu-wrap #menu-item-40 {
      	float: right;
      }

      That CSS code no longer seems to work. I verified that the element in question still has the ID menu-item-40. Am I targeting that element incorrectly or will this CSS code no longer work because of something else that has changed in the theme?

    3. If the site has child pages, it seems the theme has added new navigation items, one at the top of a child page that directs back to the parent when clicked and another as a widget that lists all child pages that are part of that site “section”. Where are the options to either a) style these elements and/or b) turn them on or off? I found some of them in the Graphene: Colours section of the Customization menus (one was under Buttons and Labels and the other under Archives) but nothing to turn them on or off.
    4. It seems that most of my questions have to do with how to target the appropriate elements in the theme, i.e. the CSS Selector names that are used for this theme’s implementation, and what styling is allowed for those elements. I can certainly use the inspector features of a browser to determine some specific elements to style, but I’m wondering if there’s a better way to see how to target the theme elements that I’m just missing. I looked through the Graphene Theme Documentation for something that outlines the CSS selectors of the theme to target for styling, but I didn’t seem to find anything. Am I missing something, or is there a sticky post in the forum that has that information? A few searches of the forums didn’t yield any results either. I’m looking for documentation similar to what Gravity Forms has provided here. Any suggestions?

    Thanks again for your help!

    Thank you Syahir, I hadn’t thought of Cloudflare. I’ve cleared that cache and upgraded to 2.0.2 and looks much better.

    I love the purple top bar and the new social media icons. Now I need a new header image… I’ve actually been meaning to do that for a while so now’s a good time for me to do that.

    Really appreciate your help and patience with me. Cheers from down under πŸ™‚
