when setting up static front page i lose my blog
-
Do you mean a custom HTML page as front page or a static WordPress page which displays the same posts or a certain one all the time?

You can set it up in the “Customize” tab on the left in your admin panel.
Just tested it on my site and it worked.
1. Create the page you want to set up as your front page
2. Create a page named “Blog”
3. Set it up in Settings > Reading > Front page displays
4. Set it up in Appearance > Customize
5. Add the pages you created to your navigation bar in Appearance > Menus

http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-a-separate-page-for-blog-posts-in-wordpress/
1. Can you make a screenshot of the options it shows you? Normally the dropdowns should be there to choose the front page and the blog page (post page).
2. I see that your “Blog” page in the menu leads to the home page instead of cherylannwills(DOT)com/blog. Can you tell me where you created the “Blog” page? Because it seems like you created it in the menu with a custom URL which would be wrong.
3. What page in your navigation bar do you want as front page? If you have not set one up then create an empty page named “Home” (Add new page, give it a title and save, nothing else required).
4. Also make sure you’re using the latest WordPress and Graphene versions (including the Graphene shortcode plugin)

The link you posted is a tutorial about child themes and not how to create a static front page. 🙂
