Styling Question for Custom Menu Widget in Sidebar

  • Anonymous

    I am trying to change the style of the sidebar menu at the URL below to do the following things:

    The items “Single Figures” “Pairs of Figures” “Groups of Figures” “Assemblies” and “Portraits” need to be static (no hover, no link, no current state, basically just text).

    The child items of the categories listed above and all items that have no child items need to change color on hover and turn to bold when they are the current page. These items already have the hover working but I can’t seem to get the current page bold working.

    If anyone has any ideas of how to do this I would greatly appreciate it. I’m learning CSS right now and this one seems to be above my pay grade.

    First issue: Go back to the custom menu you use in this widget and change the URL of those items to “#”. This will eliminate the link.

    Second issue: target just this widget by using its unique ID. Here’s how:

    How to style those links is here:

    They have a “sandbox” you can play around with to try out different possibilities. Try it! It’s a great way to experiment and how I learned tons.

    But the basic format is:

    a:link, a:visted, a:hover, a:active {styling elements;}

    Then all those elements will have the same attributes. Have fun!

    Learning? When I first looked at your web site, I thought “Why is he asking us? That’s not even Graphene.” Then I looked at your source, and sure enough, it is Graphene. Looks like you could teach us a thing or two or twenty. Your site is full of awesome!

    Haha… me too. I remember when he first came into the forum asking about the site. I thought the same thing.

    This guy is meticulous, takes his time, and makes sure he fully understands before moving forward. I admire that.

    Your site will need to go in the “Graphene Hall of Fame” once it’s completed (if we ever develop such a thing… (hint hint)).

    @Ken & Josh, +1! 🙂

    Hi there,

    I’m new to this blog, however I had a lot of useful info thanks for that 🙂

    I would like to know, because I went around the blog and didn’t found alot of particular examples of how to use the “custom css” field in the graphene theme.

    So here’s my problem: on my site ( I would like to hide the widget format(in this case it’s the background of the facebook widget) for the facebook plugin on the side (Actually it’s not a plugin but only iframe html code).

    I was not able to find any plugin that can manage different styles for the widget and I dont need to use a child theme because there is only 1 or 2 specific widget that I would like to modify the style.

    Is there a simple way to ovewrite css in the “custom css” field from the graphene theme?

    Thanks a lot for your help guys !

    (oh and sorry but for now my blog is french-only 🙂

    If I’m following you correctly, you want to remove the background from only that one widget? If so, try adding something like this to the custom css box:

    #text-3 {

    Hello Josh,

    Well thanks for the help this is exactly what i wanted to do 🙂

    Thanks guys! Finally got it working the way I wanted it and I really appreciate all the kind words. This site has definitely pushed me into some new territory.

    Thanks for all your help!

    I do have one more question. For some reason when I upload multiple images in a post and insert them into the post at the thumbnail size, some of them are not showing up. Instead I just get a collapsed border or in safari the missing image question mark.

    I’ve checked to see that the files exist and that the path is correct but for some reason they just won’t show up.

    Has this ever happened to you guys?
