Several visual and link issues to fix

    Hi there Hakim & team,

I’ve had GM Neo installed for a week now. I am using Graphene Theme with Graphene Child, which I wrote a few years ago, and which mostly customizes colors of the site.

Overall I’m very happy with NEo. Most importantly, my site now passes Google’s ‘Mobile Test’ most of the times I check it. I also like the look of the Mobile Version. So thanks much!

However, I do have several issues to sort out that I can’t figure out myself. Something is drastically affecting my visitor numbers for the worse, so I’d like to get this fixed as soon as possible.

My daily/monthly new visitor numbers are about the same, but:

    1. My bounce rate is escalating drastically – Prior to installing Neo It’s usually about 02.3% for several years. Since installing Neo, it’s escalating daily, currently at over 22%. EEk!

    2. My pageviews also dropping rapidly. In one week I”ve gone from 58,000 to 49,000! So something about viewing my website is clearly not working. 🙁

    My site: http://www.lashworldtour.com/

    Here’s what I’ve observed:

    1. Is my theme activated correctly?

If I”m on the desktop version and I go to my admin and check the theme, it shows Child Theme active.

But if I’m on the mobile version and go to admin and check the theme, it shows Mobile Neo active.

    Is that correct?

    2. Linking through to new pages on my site sometimes flips to the other version.

Sometimes when I’m on desktop view and click the ‘home’ tab, it reloads to the mobile version. Other times, it stays in desktop version.

Usually on desktop version, if I click through to any other page or post, it stays in desktop view in the new page.

But on mobile version, quite often when I click through on ANY link, it resorts to the desktop version. (I’m viewing it on my laptop, not on a mobile device). Today, however, the mobile version seems to click through to mobile version with every link. ?? It seems to vary from day to day and by which links I click through.

Hmm… This could account for my dropping stats. ? Especially if people are on a mobile device and they click through to read a post and get switched to the desktop version, that would be very difficult to read suddenly.

What can I do about this changing view?

    3. Mobile version menu is showing just a list of the first 20 items in my regular main menu, alphabetically.

THIS could also be a big reason for my drop in visitor numbers? Nobody can access my other posts and categories properly.

I think I need to create a new menu for the Neo version and then select that as the main menu for Neo? Is this correct?

(but I’m nervous about doing this due to the above Theme active issue I explained above. I dont’ want a new menu to override the main menu on my desktop view…because of Mobile NEo showing as active)

    4. In mobile version, how can I select the items to display in ‘jump to category’ option?

    5. Heading Text Color in both desktop and mobile versions –

Before updating WP and Graphene then installing Neo, I had all the Headings within my posts and pages set to a particular color. Now all my headings show up in black. I can’t figure out how to reset the headings to my previous color. I’ve checked and played around with my custom child css, graphene options and neo options, but I can’t find any way to set the headings color.

    How do I do that?

    6. setting the Text size –

I also can’t figure out how to set the text size within my posts/pages on either version. Again, I’ve tried altering my child theme custom css, graphene and neo options. Nothing seems to alter the text size.

How can I set the text size?

    7. setting a border around the photos in my posts and pages.

When creating a new post in WP editor, when adding photos I used to be able to put a border around my photos. Now I can’t find that option in the editor. Nor can I figure out how to add a border otherwise. This seems to be a WP editor change?

Is it still possible to add a border around photos in WP editor?

My older posts still show up with the photo borders, which I much prefer. Sample:

Ok, those are the main issues I’m trying to fix.

Like I mentioned, I’ve tried to fix them all on my own and can’t seem to do it. ANd my stats are dropping rapidly by the day. eek!

So any help will be very much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance, Lash

    That is the expected behaviour.

This usually happens when you’re using any kind of page caching plugin, eg. WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, etc.

Yes, you’ll need to create a custom menu for use on the mobile theme, which from what I’ve seen you’ve probably done it. Also, when accessing WP Admin, it’s best to do it on a laptop / desktop and not from a mobile device.

There is no option for this – the feature just lists down all your categories.

Which headings are these? Your page/post titles are already in a purplish colour.

If you’re making changes correctly either in your child theme’s CSS file, or in the theme’s Custom CSS feature, and the changes don’t seem to take effect, it means there’s a mistake in the CSS code you added or the previous CSS codes that you’ve added.

You can add photos to all your images by using CSS.

On another note. I would suggest making use of Google Webmaster Tools to be aware of any issues that your site might be having from Google’s perspective. It will alert you if there’s any sudden increase of 404 pages, connectivity issues, sitemap issues, etc.

    Hi Hakim,

Thanks very much for your quick reply.

I have disabled my W3 Total Cache. LEt’s see if that clears up the main problem. I probably can’t get online tomorrow, so I”ll get back on Sunday.

I’ll also check my Webmaster Tools to see if any other issues are causing a problem.

AS for the headings in my posts, I mean when you’re assembling or writing your post in the WP editor, you can select lines as H1, H2, H3 and so on in order to break the text into sections. Especially for easy scanning and for SEO. I used to have all my headings set as a bright pink-purple color. Now they’re all just black.

I’m pretty sure I had them set with CSS, but now I can’t find any css code for specifying headings.

Thanks for your answers to my other Qs, too. I”ll work on it when I get back online.

I’ll get back to let you know if the Cache issue has helped with my stats.

    Thanks again. cheers, Lash

    Hi Hakim,

As I mentioned on Friday, I disabled W3 Total Cache on my site.

Today I checked my site again. Unfortunately:

    1. My site still seems to be randomly switching between desktop and mobile versions. Sometimes it stays in one version and sometimes it switches to the other.

    2. My stats are still plummetting rapidly. It’s even worse now. My bounce rate is now 36% and now my visitor numbers are dropping drastically as well as pageviews. I’m rapidly losing my visitors and my top pages in Google searches.

As I mentioned earlier, before installing Neo, my site had a bounce rate of 02.3% for several years.

This is a pretty big disaster for my site!

What should we do? Do you think I’ve installed Neo correctly? I did it according to your instructions. Perhaps I’ve done something wrong? Do you think you should re-install it? Or what should we do?

    Hoping to fix this asap.

    cheers, Lash

    Hello again HAkim,

Here’s the scoop from Google Webmaster tools and Moblie Friendly Test.

    A. Mobile Friendly Test – my site passes. But, in complete contradiction to this:

    B. Google WEbmaster Tools – from 4/30/2015:

    1. Viewport not configured for 563 pages (out of 690)

    2. small font size on 563 pages

    3. touch elements too close on 563 pages

    4. content not sized to viewport on 563 pages

So, basically, it sounds like Neo is not working properly on my site according to Google.

Maybe you need to re-install it for me?

    cheers, Lash
