Original files for old version of theme available?
-
Hello!
This is my first visit to this forum, so I hope I’m posting this in the right place.
I developed a website 7 years ago using the Graphene theme. At the time I created it, a friend and I made many modifications to it, on the fly, especially to the .css file (and a few others, like footer.php). We did not know about creating Child Themes. After the site was finished, I learned about child themes and how it’s important to create them if you’re going to make extensive modifications. Oops.
So since then, I have NEVER updated the theme, and our website has continued to function perfectly…. since 2013!…. until now. We’re having some issues, but that’s not why I’m writing.
Here’s my question: We are using version 1.7.3 of the theme. Is it possible to obtain the ORIGINAL FILES of version 1.7.3, so that I can use them to compare to the WORKING FILES that our site is currently running on? If I can compare the original files to what we are running, I’m hoping we can then decide how to proceed from there in order to get the theme updated.
Thank you for any and all help!
AdminHere’s the link you can use to download version 1.7.3:
http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/download/graphene.1.7.3.zip?nostats=1Syahir, I have a few more questions…. I’ve never done a child theme before, and I’m actually pretty rusty on lots of WordPress processes. A friend is going to compare the 1.7.3 files with the files we are actually running the site on. Where can he find those current files? Can he find them within the WP admin area or would it be better to look at files on the host server? In either case, how would he access them? (He has login credentials for either.)
Also…… is this the best way to try to “retroactively” create a child theme? It seemed like the first thing to try. Once we discover what the differences are, what would be the steps we’d take in order to create the child theme, update the theme to the latest version, and then re-apply the child theme to our website?
Thank you!
AdminThe files are located in
wp-content/themes/graphene
folder in the host server. If your aim is to get your website updated to the latest version of Graphene, I would suggest to just start fresh with the customizations. That is, update Graphene to the latest version, create a child theme, and then redo the necessary customizations using the child theme.
The reason for this is because Graphene version 2.0 and above represents a major upgrade over all the previous versions. If you create a child theme for Graphene versions lower than 2.0, there’s no guarantee that the customizations made using that child theme will work with the latest version of Graphene. Most probably it won’t, and you’ll have to make further adjustments after that.
