I have managed to create new templates pages as shown in my site here http://www.usefulref.com/kids-entertainment-audio-visual/, and also http://www.usefulref.com/enteratinment-news/.
In order to create templates pages which are different from the selected theme column configuration, the trick is to create the template as normal, insert the header and footer raw code into the template. You can then modify the header and footer raw code in the template to remove the columns.
This is a great flexible theme.
