First query: if you are referring to the space to the left and right of your picture, you can either use a larger picture, or you can edit the picture, click on “Advanced Settings” and change the width and height so that it fits in your new width better. I would recommend the former method, however, because if you scale up you will see distortion in the image.

You don’t really want to get rid of it. If you make your content area have a width of 100%, then your pages will be stretched very wide on the newer wider monitors, and readability suffers. When readability suffers, you lose readers.

Try an action hook widget area:

You will need to add some CSS to style it properly, however.
