Favicon URL in Graphene v2
-

The Favicon feature has been implemented natively in WordPress, so we have removed it from the theme. See this page for more info: https://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Favicon

Those are remnant from the old version. It’s not being used anywhere now, and new install of the theme’s won’t have that value anymore. We’re just keeping it there for existing installations just in case we need it later on, for example if we’re making automatic migration from the theme’s setting to the native WordPress option.
This is not quite true. I happened to upgrade to V2 on my staging site and import graphene-options-xxx.txt settings from my staging into my real site. Now my real site is forced to use my staging site favicon URL and the favicon file from uploads staging site folder. The old-fashioned favicon.ico in the public root folder is simply ignored if I don’t use native WordPress favicon feature.
Can I just use a text editor to remove “favicon_url” reference from my latest graphene-options-xxx.txt export file and re-import the edited graphene-options file into my real site? It seems that this fix has removed favicon.ico reference from the database on my staging site, but I wanted to check if this approach can be used for my real site.

Thanks for highlighting this. In the next update, we’ll include a fix which will remove the old
favicon_urlsetting if the WordPress site icon has been set. If it has not been set, the oldfavicon_urlwill still be used to avoid catching existing users unaware and finding their favicons are missing. In the mean time, you can use a text editor to remove the
favicon_urlreference from your Graphene options export file and re-import them into your real site.
