Can't configure slider to show large image and title/excerpt text in overlay at bottom

I’m trying to set up my slider area so that it shows the featured image filling the slider root with the post title and excerpt in an overlay at the bottom. I’ve got the text overlay, but I can’t get the image to show up in the box. When I View Source, no images are being loaded.

    My slider settings are:

    • Slider image: featured image
    • All of my featured images were created to be the size of the slider area – 640×326; and they were uploaded with the thumbnails size also set to 640×326
    • Slider display style: currently “Background image and excerpt” but I’ve also tried “Thumbnail and excerpt”

    My URL is jmek.net/lq2013b

Where am I killing my images?

There is no need to do that.

Your slider settings for wanted layout is correct, so something is wrong with featured images obviously. Did you assign the proper post category, and does posts have featured image attached? I know that I’m asking basic questions but…

As an experiment just now, I tried using a featured image from the WP Media Gallery. (For the past three years, I have been using Graphene with the NextGen gallery and pulling all my featured images from NextGen.) The image does appear in the slider, but it is temperamental about the size: smaller images appear tiled or not at all (see slider #2).

    Which brings up two questions:

    1. Does Graphene no longer work with NextGen?

    2. What are the criteria for the size of the image that needs to be uploaded?

At least as big as the slider’s size. Images bigger than that will be resized to fit the slider. Images smaller than that will be left as is and tiled. You can easily remove the tiling via CSS, but that will leave a lot of whitespace in your slider.

Also, I noticed that your slider images are PNG images. This is not the best file type for photos such as those you have for the slider. PNG photos have much, much bigger file size than JPG images for comparable image quality.

You set a featured image from NextGen by clicking the Add Media button, choosing its Set Featured Image option, then click NextGEN Gallery at the bottom left of the left column. Locate your NextGEN image and click Use as Featured Image.

Thanks for letting me know about the image size. That’s important!

NextGen developer says they’ll fix this in version 2.0, but declined to give any expected date when that version will be released. For now, you’ll have to reupload the image using WordPress “Add Media” feature, and then set that image as the feature image.
