I’ve now looked at a number of back up programs
All have issues
Backup wordpress cron jobs failure
backwpup doesnt restore database
snapshot backup old
wp complete backup old
wordpress ez backup old
onlinebackup for wordpress old
complete central backup old
xcloner requires php restore
updraft plus doesn’t back up core – maybe good idea
Duplicator – some knowledge of database required
In the end I used Duplicator – it creates a complete duplicate of your site
It has an option for excluding a folder eg a developers folder where you might want to experiment with a duplicate of your site)
I’ll write a bit more how to use it if anyone’s interested
