Updating to the new Graphene Theme

We noticed our slider stopped working today and we think its because we haven't updated the theme.

Our problem is when the person who originally created our site using the theme they didn't use a child them. All the changes to the theme (backgrounds, widgets etc) have been made to the parent theme (although we haven't tampered with the css file directly. All changes have been done using the controls in the dashboard)

Is it possible to create a child theme with a site which has had the parent theme modified, do the update and not lose everything?

If not is there another way of updating without losing our content and layout.

If you haven't edited PHP/CSS/JS files in parent theme, and have done all the customizations using theme options, you can safely update the theme. You can install a child theme once you update the parent theme. Note that after activating child theme, you may have to reupload header image, body background and reassign custom menus, if any.

Yes we've only made changes using the theme options and haven't made any changes directly to any of the PHP/CSS/JS files. So when we make changes in the theme options we aren't directly changing the css we are simply creating a list of changes that the theme then pulls from the database is that right? Will we lose the background/header image when we do the update or when we create the child page?

Something like that :)
Like Prasanna said you will need to re upload background / header image etc only if you install child theme. You don't need to install child theme if you don't have need for more drastic changing. Although, it's recommended to export theme options to make some kind of backup before you update theme.
