I want to add share buttons to the listing of posts in my blog page overview. I do not with to enable comments for various reasons. Is there an easy way of getting this functionality in place? If not what is the best way of getting it anyway?

Keep in mind that share buttons share the page that they are on, not the page that they are linked to. If you set them up like this, they will share the "blog page overview", not the individual blog posts.
Hmmm.. thats not my intention... I'd like to give readers the option of directly (re)tweeting or sharing the post to others from the blog page per item. is this then possible?
NB I also want to given tjem the opportunity to follow my site by the twitters I automatically send out when posting. This is covered by a widget already.

It is, but it depends on the code you use. Most sharing services have an API you will need to make use of. You can read about AddThis.com's API here:

Kenneth, thanks for sharing. I got a little lost as to what to use for wordpress. I had hoped for something that I would be able to introduce without much extra study. Consudering i will address it after some other issues have been resolved
